Licensing

Device Guardian + Access Management 1.1

Overview

Device Guardian (DG) and Device Guardian Access Management (DGAM) require end-user licenses issued by Zebra Technologies. The licensing process is simple and seamlessly integrated into the normal operation of DG/DGAM, eliminating the need for additional user intervention. Zebra Technologies issues either DG or DGAM licenses based on the purchased product.

Note: When integrated with Identity Guardian version 2.0 or later for device access and user accountability, DG licenses are required since Identity Guardian relies on DG for accountability data.

There are three types of licenses for DG/DGAM:

  • DG Mobile Device Licenses - Applies to mobile computer devices
  • DGAM Mobile Device Licenses - Applies to mobile computer and kiosk devices
  • Accessory Licenses - Applies to accessories connected to mobile computers, such as Bluetooth scanners

Available license types for each are:

  • Trial license - 90-day evaluation period
  • Term-based license - 1-year, 3-year, or 5-year term

This guide explains the process to obtain DG/DGAM licenses for commercial use and applying them to individual devices.

Licensing Behavior

  • After licenses are acquired, they automatically synchronize with the DG/DGAM web portal every 24 hours. Administrators can monitor available licenses through the License Summary in the DG/DGAM web portal to view the number of licenses available, licenses consumed, and total licenses.
  • Licenses are shared from a single pool, regardless of expiration date.
  • When a device registers to the DG/DGAM server, a license is allocated to it from the license pool on a first-come, first-served basis.

Evaluation License

Zebra offers time-limited trial licenses to allow companies to evaluate the performance of Zebra solutions in their environment.

  • Customers, partners and distributors: Submit a request through a Zebra account manager or sales engineer
  • Zebra account managers and sales engineers: Submit requests using SFDC forms
  • Zebra engineers and other Zebra employees and contractors: Submit a request in the Zebra ServiceNOW portal

Secondary BLE

For hardware with secondary BLE, a 1-year or 3-year DG/DGAM special license pricing is available for customers for each hardware purchased (1:1). At the end of the term, a new DG/DGAM license is required for DG/DGAM to function (follow the procedure below). See the device compatibility table for supported hardware with secondary BLE.

I. Contact a Reseller

The first step in obtaining a license is to engage with Zebra or a Zebra reseller. Visit Zebra's Device Guardian product page and select one of the methods for contacting Zebra directly or engaging with a reseller or partner.

Alternatively, select one of the following Zebra resources:

After licenses are procured, you will receive a welcome email from Zebra which includes the following:

  • Link to the DG/DGAM web portal
  • First time login credentials. Reset the password for these credentials.
  • A .PDF file to configure the DG/DGAM client app to connect to the DG/DGAM cloud server (for support of legacy Device Tracker).
  • A Managed Configurations .CONFIG file to enroll the device to DG/DGAM through Zebra DNA Cloud or an EMM.

II. Access Licensing System

After a licensing agreement is purchased from Zebra or a Zebra reseller, an email is sent to the requester containing user credentials for accessing the Zebra Enterprise Software Licensing system.

Visit the Zebra licensing support page. Register and log into the portal to:

  • Order licenses
  • Check status of existing orders

After licenses are processed, the license information from the Zebra license portal is synchronized with the DG/DGAM web portal every 24 hours. Administrators can manually refresh the license data to synchronize with the Zebra Enterprise Software Licensing system by clicking the Sync Licenses button in the web portal.

III. Automatic License Assignment

Licenses are seamlessly assigned during the device registration process with the DG/DGAM server. Allocation is done on a first-come, first-served basis based on enrollment with the server.

As part of registration, after a device is configured with the server settings, it communicates with the DG/DGAM server. If a license is available, it is allocated to the device, enabling DG/DGAM functionality. If no license is available, the device displays a message indicating the unavailability of a license.
