Overview
The BarcodeDecoder
class is designed to decode various types of barcodes detected in images. Initially, the Localizer class identifies the location of barcodes in captured images. Subsequently, the BarcodeDecoder
class decodes barcodes from either entire images or specific regions of the image defined by bounding boxes. It can handle single and multiple barcode decoding within a single image.
Additionally, the process()
method of the BarcodeDecoder
class facilitates the ability to localize and decode barcodes simultaneously. This interface enables the development of CameraX analyzers in conjunction with other detectors.
Common applications:
- Retail and Inventory Management - Automate product identification and inventory management by decoding barcodes on shelves, labels, or packaging.
- Mobile Applications - Integrate scanning capabilities for QR codes and other barcodes in mobile apps.
- Logistics and Supply Chain - Track packages and shipments by decoding barcodes on boxes and pallets.
- Healthcare - Scan barcodes on medical supplies and patient wristbands for inventory management and patient tracking.
AI Model
The barcode-localizer model is designed specifically for barcode decoding. For more information and to download the model, refer to Barcode Localizer Model.
Developer Guide
This guide outlines the process for setting up and executing barcode decoding using BarcodeDecoder, from initialization to decoding image data.
Step 1: Initialization of BarcodeDecoder
- Import the BarcodeDecoder class using
com.zebra.ai.vision.detector.BarcodeDecoder
. - Initialize BarcodeDecoder Settings: Create an instance of
BarcodeDecoder.Settings
, which will hold any configurations needed to set for the barcode decoding process. - Configure Barcode Symbologies: Enable the desired barcode symbologies to recognize and set its parameters; refer to the Supported Barcode Symbologies.
- Initialize and Load the Model Asynchronously - Declare a
BarcodeDecoder
object and use aCompletableFuture
to load the model asynchronously. Refer to the Barcode Localizer Model info card to learn about the supported and cached input resolutions for reducing model load time. - Handle Synchronous Initialization - Implement the
thenAccept()
callback to use the decoder instance once it is available.
Sample Code:
import com.zebra.ai.vision.detector.BarcodeDecoder;
// Initialize BarcodeDecoder settings object
String mavenModelName = "barcode-localizer";
BarcodeDecoder.Settings settings = new BarcodeDecoder.Settings(mavenModelName)
// Enable UPCE1 and its parameters or other desired symbologies
settings.Symbology.UPCE1.enable(true);
settings.Symbology.UPCE1.setReportCheckDigit(true);
// Initialize BarcodeDecoder object
BarcodeDecoder barcodeDecoder = null;
// Executor = An executor thread in which the results are returned
CompletableFuture<BarcodeDecoder> futureObject = BarcodeDecoder.getBarcodeDecoder(settings, executor);
// Use the futureObject to implement thenAccept() callback of CompletableFuture.
futureObject.thenAccept (decoderInstance -> {
// Use the decoder object returned here for decoding the barcodes
barcodeDecoder = decoderInstance;
}).exceptionally( e -> {
if (e instanceof AIVisionSDKException) {
Log.e(TAG, "[AIVisionSDKException] BarcodeDecoder object creation failed: " + e.getMessage());
}
return null;
});
Step 2: Decode
Choose a decoding method:
- Method 1: Detect and Decode Using process() Method - This method provides a streamlined approach to simultaneously localize and decode barcodes. It is ideal for integration with CameraX analyzers, providing one-step detection and decoding for efficient processing.
- Method 2: Decode Full Image - This method decodes a single barcode from the entire image. If the image contains multiple barcodes, only the first successfully decoded barcode is displayed.
- Method 3: Decode Image Regions - This method is useful for decoding multiple barcodes located in specific regions of an image. When localization results are available, they can be passed as detection parameters to this API.
Instructions on how to use each method are provided in the subsections below.
> Method 1: Detect and Decode Using the process() Method
The process() method in the BarcodeDecoder
class enables applications to pass an ImageData
object and perform both simultaneous localization and decoding, based on the Localizer and BarcodeDecode settings respectively. Designed as a “detector” for use with CameraX analyzers, this interface can be integrated alongside other detectors, such as TextOCR.
Notes:
- AI Data Capture SDK also offers a CameraX
ImageAnalysis.Analyzer
, which can localize, decode and track barcodes, and notify applications. For further details, refer to EntityTrackerAnalyzer. - The process() method can be called even if the application is not implementing the CameraX
ImageAnalyzer
interface. Applications may pass theImageData
objects from other sources, such as Camera2 APIs or local storage. In such cases, skip step 2 and 3 below.
Initialize Localizer settings - Perform the following steps:
- Create an Array for Runtime Processor Order - Initialize an array of Integer with size 1 to hold the runtime processor order.
- Set Runtime Processor Order - Assign the InferencerOptions.DSP constant to the first element of the array. This specifies that the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) should be used for processing.
- Assign Runtime Processor Order to Localizer Settings - Set the runtimeProcessorOrder of the inferencerOptions within detectorSetting to the array created in step 1. This configures the localizer to utilize DSP as the processing unit.
- Set Default Dimensions for the Localizer - Configure the default height and width for the localizer by assigning values to defaultDims.height and defaultDims.width, respectively.
This example sets both the height and width to 640 pixels.
Integer[] rpo = new Integer[1]; rpo[0] = InferencerOptions.DSP; // set runtime processor order to DSP decoderSettings.detectorSetting.inferencerOptions.runtimeProcessorOrder = rpo; // enable DSP for localizer decoderSettings.detectorSetting.inferencerOptions.defaultDims.height = 640; // set default height for the localizer decoderSettings.detectorSetting.inferencerOptions.defaultDims.width = 640; // set default width for the localizer
Implement ImageAnalysis.Analyzer - Develop a custom CameraX analyzer by implementing the ImageAnalysis.Analyzer interface.
Override analyze() - CameraX feeds the frames continuously to the Analyzers, that are bound to it. Users can override the analyzer() interface for their specific functionalities.
Prepare Inputs - The process() method requires ImageData object. Use the helper methods of ImageData for conversion, based on the source image type (ImageProxy or Android.media.image or Bitmap).
Localize and Decode Barcodes - Use the process() method to detect and decode barcodes.
Handle Results - Process the decoded barcode when the CompletableFuture completes.
Dispose Decoder - After decoding is complete and the decoder instance is no longer needed, dispose of the decoder to release resources.
Sample Code:
barcodeDecoder.process(ImageData.fromImageProxy(imageProxy))
.thenAccept(result ->{
for(BarcodeEntity barcodeEntity:result){
// Access bounding box and confidence
Rect boundingBox = barcodeEntity.getBoundingBox();
float confidence = barcodeEntity.accuracy();
// Access barcode-specific data
String barcodeValue = barcodeEntity.getValue();
String barcodeType = barcodeEntity.getSymbology();
}
})
.exceptionally(e ->{
if (e instanceof AIVisionSDKException) {
Log.e(TAG, "[AIVisionSDKException] Error in barcode decoding: " + e.getMessage());
}
return null;
});
> Method 2: Decode Full Image
This method executes the decoder over the entire image to find and decode a single barcode. If multiple barcodes are present, only the first decoded barcode is returned.
- Prepare Inputs: Obtain a Bitmap image that contains the barcode. Use an
Executor
to manage the asynchronous decoding operation. - Decode Barcode: Call the decode method on the
BarcodeDecoder
instance, passing the image and executor. - Handle Results: Process the decoded barcode when the
CompletableFuture
completes. - Dispose Decoder: After decoding is complete and the decoder instance is no longer needed, dispose of the decoder to release resources.
Sample Code:
// Decoding starts once the bitmap image is available
// Input params: bitmap image and an executor thread object (in which the decode happens and the results are returned).
CompletableFuture<Result> resultFutureObject = barcodeDecoder.decode(bitmap, executor);
resultFutureObject.thenAccept (results -> {
//get barcode bounding box here
BBox bb = results. GetCorners();
//get the barcode value here
String barcodeValue = results.getvalue();
// get the barcode symbology here
int symbol = results.getSymbology();
}).exceptionally( e ->{
if (e instanceof AIVisionSDKException) {
Log.e(TAG, "[AIVisionSDKException] Error in barcode decoding: " + e.getMessage());
}
return null;
});
// Once done with using the decoder object, dispose the object to release the resources and memory used for decoding
barcodeDecoder.dispose();
> Method 3: Decode Image Regions
This method decodes multiple barcodes within specific areas of an image, defined by bounding boxes identified through a separate localization process, such as a Localizer. The Localizer
object and Decoder
object must be created separately.
Step 1: Barcode Detection:
- Configure Localizer Settings - Create and configure a
Localizer.Settings
object with the model name. Optionally, set the input dimensions. - Initialize Localizer - Asynchronously obtain a
Localizer
instance using aCompletableFuture
.
Step 2: Barcode Decoding:
- Create BarcodeDecoder Settings - Instantiate a
Settings
object for theBarcodeDecoder
and enable the desired symbologies. - Initialize BarcodeDecoder - Asynchronously obtain a
BarcodeDecoder
instance using aCompletableFuture
. - Detect Objects - Once a camera image is available, use the
Localizer
to detect objects. This method accepts aBitmap
image and returns bounding boxes of detected items. - Decode Barcodes - Use the
BarcodeDecoder
to decode the detected barcodes from the bounding boxes.
Note: To execute the following API, the Localizer
and Decoder
object must be created separately:
CompletableFuture<Result> resultFutureObject = barcodeDecoder.decode(bitmap, detections , executor);
Sample Code:
// Barcode Detection
String mavenModelName = "barcode-localizer";
Localizer.Settings settings = new Localizer( mavenModelName);
// Optional: Set model input size parameters
settings.inferencerOptions.defaultDims.height = 640;
settings.inferencerOptions.defaultDims.width = 640;
// Initialize Localizer object
Localizer localizer = null;
CompletableFuture<Localizer> futureObject = Localizer.getLocalizer(settings,executor);
// Use the futureObject to implement thenAccept() callback of //CompletableFuture.
futureObject.thenAccept ( localizerInstance -> {
localizer = localizerInstance; // Use the localizer object for the detection of barcodes/shelves/products
}).exceptionally( e -> {
if (e instanceof AIVisionSDKException) {
Log.e(TAG, "[AIVisionSDKException] Localizer object creation failed: " + e.getMessage());
}
return null;
});
// Create BarcodeDecoder object
BarcodeDecoder barcodeDecoder = null;
// Create settings for BarcodeDecoder
BarcodeDecoder.Settings settings = new BarcodeDecoder.Settings(mavenModelName);
// Enable symbology settings
settings.Symbology.UPCE1.enable(true);
settings.Symbology.UPCE1.setReportCheckDigit(true);
// Initialize executor
Executor executor = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(1);
// Asynchronously get BarcodeDecoder instance
CompletableFuture<BarcodeDecoder> futureDecoderObj = BarcodeDecoder.getBarcodeDecoder(settings, executor);
// Use the futureObject to implement thenAccept() callback of CompletableFuture.
futureDecoderObj.thenAccept (decoderInstance -> {
barcodeDecoder = decoderInstance; // Use the decoder object returned here for barcode detection
}).exceptionally( e -> {
if (e instanceof AIVisionSDKException) {
Log.e(TAG, "[AIVisionSDKException] BarcodeDecoder object creation failed: " + e.getMessage());
}
return null;
});
// Detect objects once the camera image is available
BBox[] detections;
// Input params: bitmap image and an executor thread object in which the detection happens
// Results are returned in thenAccept() callback
CompletableFuture <BBox[]> resultFutureObject = localizer.detect(image , executor);
resultFutureObject.thenAccept ( bboxes -> {
detections = bboxes; // Process the returned array of bounding boxes
if (e instanceof AIVisionSDKException) {
Log.e(TAG, "[AIVisionSDKException] Error in localizer barcode: " + e.getMessage());
}
return null;
});
// Once the bounding boxes are available, pass them to barcodeDecoder for decoding
Bitmap image = ...; // //Load your Bitmap image here
Result[] decodes;
// Perform decode on barcode
CompletableFuture<Result[]> resultFutureObject = barcodeDecoder.decode(bitmap, detections , executor);
resultFutureObject.thenAccept (result -> {
// Process the returned result (Result[]) of decoded barcodes
decodes = result;
}).exceptionally( e ->{
if (e instanceof AIVisionSDKException) {
Log.e(TAG, "[AIVisionSDKException] Error in barcode decoding: " + e.getMessage());
}
return null;
});
// Dispose resources
// Once done using the decoder object, dispose it to release the resources and memory used for decoding.
barcodeDecoder.dispose();
